چکیده

Three cases of absence of the carpal scaphoid bone have previously been reported in this country (Hodgson 1943, Hanley and Conlon 1957). All three had similar deformities, namely absence or hypoplasia of the carpal scaphoid bone, associated with retardation in the development of the first metacarpal bone, the styloid process of the radius and thenar muscles. While agreeing with these authors that their cases are examples of a rare congenital lesion, I think that they must be considered as only one form of a group of lesions which are not so rare as has been previously supposed. These lesions consist in a congenital hypoplasia of the lower end of the radius and a hypoplasia of the muscles of the radial aspect of the forearm, and in a congenital hypoplasia of the carpal scaphoid bone, associated with abnormalities of the thumb and of the thenar muscles. The form of presentation extends from absence of the thumb to a hypoplasia of the first metacarpal bone, styloid process of the radius, the thenar muscles and the muscles of the radial aspect of the forearm. The recognition of these lesions is of importance from the point of view of reconstructive surgery. In America in 1958 Barsky described the gradations in which ectrodactyly of the thumb may present, and said that they ranged from complete absence of the thumb ray to absence of only the distal phalanx. He did not mention in any of his patients the absence or hypoplasia of the carpal scaphoid bone, though several of his radiographs did in fact demonstrate this absence.

[Unilateral congenital absence of the carpal scaphoid associated with dysplasia of the capitate. Presentation of a case].

We report on a case of aplasia or unilateral congenital absence of the carpal scaphoid associated with dysplasia of the capitate. Congenital absence of the carpal scaphoid is a rare but well-documented condition. As far as we know, the present case is the seventh one reported in the medical literature. Imaging studies (X-ray and MRI) confirmed the absence of the carpal scaphoid associated with ...

Reconstruction of isolated scaphoid dislocation with carpal dissociation, associated with a carpal anomaly

A case is presented of isolated scaphoid dislocation with carpal dissociation in the presence of a lunato-triquetral coalition. We present the treatment and follow-up of this case. In addition, the literature on scaphoid dislocation and its treatment is reviewed. We emphasize the need to reconstruct the carpal alignment and scapho-lunate linkage.

Scaphoid malunion.

We reviewed 10 patients with symptomatic malunion of a carpal scaphoid fracture. All had displacement with dorsiflexed intercalated segment instability, and suffered from pain, restricted range of movement at the wrist and decreased grip strength. The restriction of flexion-extension and the decreased grip strength correlated with the severity of the DISI deformity. Seven patients had a correct...

Congenital absence of the radius, scaphoid, trapezium, thumb and hypoplasia of the lunate.

The congenital absence of the right radius, scaphoid, trapezium, thumb and hypoplasia of the lunate are described in a 9-year-old boy. He had full extension of his elbow, while flexion motion was limited to 90 degrees. His hand was radially deviated. The thumb was absent. The index and middle fingers were united and immobile. The ring finger had movement only at the metacarpophalangeal joint, w...
